The Origins of Al-Razi
Born around 864 AD, he became the first director of the Great Hospital in Baghdad. Al-Razi is said to have determined the site of the new Baghdad hospital by hanging pieces of meat at several sites and observing which of them had experienced the least putrification. His confidence in Galenic theory is exemplified in an anecdote about treating the caliph Al-Manseur who was suffering from some debilitating condition.
