Ira's Vanishing Sent Panic Straight to My Toes
Ira took the shortest path, straight through the matted grass of the game trail. Soon he was far ahead of me and it was all I could do to keep my eyes on him. He ducked low as he ran, and I lost sight of him. Bill's bad foot and packs slowed him down after we'd been fleeing for ten minutes that felt like fleeting seconds. From so high up I could see the forest beyond, and the river, and a flat brown bay at low tide. No town, no Red Hill. The sound of the daytime whistle is stuck in me like a splinter.
