The social media is really an anti fourth estate, the exact opposite of a printing press. Democracy emerged when we had broadcast and the ability to get the same message out to everyone. It's that reading was actually an important part of it. There's very little hypernormal stimuli in reading plain text on paper. And you have to actually stay focused for a fairly long period of time without distractions,. So you're actually training attention span like a muscle. To engage in democracy, i've got to be able to hold my view and some one else's view, in someone else's view. At the same time, write complexity of the situation means i need more working memory to hold the whole thing
