Sherlock was not supposed to solve the puzzle just to impress. He was supposed to save the life and he didn't realize that there was a little bigger play. It kind of goes back to like the Moriarty like leaving breadcrumbs and the working back fall. This is kind of I don't know if Moriarty's done this or John’s done this or how much of this is him really but there's obviously a puzzle he has to solve.
