Martin Johnson Heat's Hummingbird Paintings
Martin Johnson Heat knew that nobody who had painted hummingbirds before had painted them from life. He thought he could do what Audubon had done, which was to track the birds to their lair. Hummingbirds flitting about at the dawn of the planet almost. There's something beautiful but very wild and primitive it seems. And I think he did imagine that he was painting the origins of life.
