Could It Have Evolved Any Differently?
The future relationship between Britain and Europe has never been a negotiation in its essence. It's been a choice, hard or soft - you get out of the European trading system. Hard means you leave not just the political union of Europe, but the economic union that was created around the single market and customs arrangements. Or alternatively, you can say, look, we're going to leave the political side of Europe,. But then the risk is you become a rule-taker. So in those circumstances, it's the kind of pointless Brexit.
