Mao had serious doubts about Khrushchev's approach, according to Philip Short. He notes a meeting between the Chinese leader and a Soviet diplomat in which Mao is more than happy to talk about Stalin's errors. But only those errors that related to China - he made no reference to the problems of the cult of personality generally. What Mao was saying as ideological mistakes in the Soviet Union also soon spilled over into policy mistakes abroad.
