Over two days of protest 79 people died, hundreds more were injured and the police made over a thousand arrests. Zane was eventually released from prison in 19 78. The bread protest had such a searing impact that no egyptian government has dared meddle with the bread subsidy since. Even to day, egyptians are given ration cards for five loaves per day at less than one tenth of what it cost to produce the bread.
