The Role of Genetic Traits in Sports Performance

There are more than 200 genetic variants that have been associated with physical performance. Two gene variants the ACE and the ACTN 3 have been consistently associated with endurance and power related performance respectively. The most studied is the genetic marker ACTN 3 often referred to as the strength power gene or the sprinter's gene. This marker controls whether muscle cells can produce a protein called alpha actin N3 found only in fast-twitch muscle fibers. A functional copy of this gene is a R allele and a mutated non-functional copy is an ex allele.
