Shankara Acharya uses a nice term here, Shankara Acharya. He says, in order to prevent the decay of meditation, what is the loss of focus? You have carefully built up a stillness, and it is always subject to loss. Mindfulness will prevent that, but if you are not mindful, it will happen most of the time. So this is the four stages in which it goes through. We make an effort to focus, stage one. Stage two, distraction. Stage three, wandering mind.
