Napoleon's Last Act Before Leaving Corsica
Anyone travelling alone through the corsican highlands was at risk, and powley's vendetta had put a target on napoleon. The shepherds probably could have named their own reward if they'd handed him over to powley. But this was corsica, and those clan ties mattered. They offered napoleon their hospitality and volunteered to see him safe to calvi. When napoleon passed away 27 years later, he left the shepherds a small fortune in his will. He remembered each of them by name.
