The Reformation, Uh, Yeah.
The Schmalkaldic League was the first military alliance between Protestant principalities that really had any teeth behind it. Charles V could set his sights on his internal enemies, i.e. the Schmachaldic League. The Ottomans made their beachhead into Eastern Europe in 1526 after the battle of Mohawks. And they were also like making, you know, play with the the Barbary Courcers and then harrying the coasts of Spain.
