The diagnosis of new onset PE is similar to that in the non-pregnant individual, ventilation perfusion scanning and CT angio are associated with relatively low radiation exposures for the fetus. The American thoracic society and the society for thoracic radiology suggest that a chest x-ray be used as the initial evaluation. However, the selection of the most appropriate test also rely on local availability and expertise.
