Jeremy Bentham is the father of utilitarianism, a branch of philosophy that believes society should maximize the happiness of its population. An offshoot called act utilitarianism states that an action should be considered morally right if it is the action that maximizes pleasure and absence of pain for the greatest number of people. Even Mr. Spock came around to understanding that sometimes, act utilitarianism isn't the best solution to human issues.
