Joseph Smith's Trial in Missouri
Missouri tried to extradite Joseph Smith on three occasions. Each time, he used habeas corpus to challenge the basis of the extradition request and corresponding arrest warrants. He did this all in Illinois, where he believed he could receive fairer hearings. In 1841, a judge named Stephen A. Douglas ruling that the arrest warrant was faulty freed him from custody.
