The Dutch and British replaced the Portuguese as dominant Western powers in this period. The Manchus had seen the Qing family as a threat, so they put lots of effort to try to cut them off from any support. In 1661 they forced villagers in most of Fuzhan and Guang Kong province to relocate 10 to 20 miles inland. They destroyed villages on the coast and anyone caught trying to return to the coast was executed. And despite all these, they still couldn't beat them.
