Marie LaVoe - A Legendary Voodoo Queen
Marie LaVoe was a voodoo queen in New Orleans. She learned the practice from an earlier voodoo king and quickly became his cultural successor. In 1874, she held a St. John's Eve gathering on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain that attracted 12,000 people. Her friendship with church rector Pear Antoine led to her helping free slaves for years.
