Faulkner uses this exact same technique when he's talking about the south being presented as beautiful as camaraderie as family values. The rotting floorboard represents that there's something wrong which is slavery in the south that needs to be fixed here. Faulkner hits you a lot more on the head with it where as the war is being fought you'll notice the south falls apart here. So let's talk about the old self allegory I believe now being six chapters in Mr Crypto you can kind of help start taking this away.
