The Importance of Alignment in Research
I don't know if active research into improving chemical weapons would be a good thing, for example. And I think you could easily view this as just a form of knowledge that certain areas of inquiry will more than likely lead to negative outcomes and therefore it makes sense to regulate them. Of course, this can go too far, and I'm not advocating. But I wouldn't want to be naively saying that every single thing that people choose to research should inevitably be allowed to proceed.
