The Fundamental Fantasy of the Child
Lacan: The parent not only wants my lack. Once what I don't have, they also want me to be absent from their life. From life itself. This fantasy of death is a defense against that superimposition of lack. That results in this angst filled self mortifying fantasy. Anxiety and self mortification are unbearable. So what the subject, the child here does is they build another more palatable fantasy. And this is what Lacan means whenever he talks about the fundamental fantasy. Neither of these experiences, the anxiety that comes from encountering the desire of a bigger other, nor the self mortifying Fantasy that it fuels is bearable.
