How Do You Translate the Esoteric and Beautiful Mathematics of Mandelbrot and Lorentz?

In the early days, we were rather sort of blase about how you would add these perturbations to the initial conditions to generate an ensemble. And it turns out that if you add small amplitude and small scale perturbations into a weather forecast model they don't grow at all. They're completely the opposite of what you might think from the butterfly effect. The reason is, or a key reason anyway, is that models have a lot of artificial kind of damping and what we call artificial viscosity to kind of keep them stable.
