The collapse of Enron is only important for our purposes because of the collateral damage it caused. Energy trading was just starting to explode due to deregulation. At the risk of oversimplifying Enron went down because it was a sophisticated shell game. They moved accounting entries in and out of special purpose entities in order to obscure their true financial state.
