Phil saw a huge blast of light. Heard a sound like a grenade. Felt a thousand wasps, stinging him from the inside. The blast threw him off the ledge he was on. And after it was done, he hung there on the rope. Totally limp. Most strike victims lose consciousness. Some wake up temporarily blind or paralyzed. Because of its speed, it doesn't have time to do a lot of physical damage. It's more like hot potato.
