The Moral Flattening of Rights
We can have obligations to animals, even though they don't have rights. They have obligations in virtue of suffering and activities that they engage in which we should take account of in our actions. That doesn't mean we're respecting rights with that corresponds to the creatures capacity to determine and think about its own fate. But I would put it to you that throughout the centuries it's only when people have fought for rightsthat society has given them respect. So why shouldn't we intrinsically feel that animals also have rights that we have a moral duty to them? We need different concepts. Why does it have to be the notion of rights that's in play?"
