How Can You Give People a Bigger Reward and Yet They Do So Much Worse?

In a study, participants were told how much they would get for doing tasks. They wanted to see what the effect of these rewards was and if they come in understanding in economics. Now as it turns out, group one did about the same as each other. Group two perhaps is slightly worse than group one. And then with the five months worth of work pay group, they did way worse than both the other groups on every measure. This flies in the face of sort of behavioristic type understandings of motivation.
