CHAPTER

Charles Dickens and the Pickwick Papers

In 1836, Charles Dickens married Catherine Hogoth. He also wrote a series of funny stories called the Pickwick Papers. People loved his sense of humour and it became a big success. But he was disgusted by American slavery - which happened in the south. This didn't go down very well with some Americans. They thought he was rude for criticising them. In 1840s, Charles went off to tour America. It's here that he started campaigning against bad stuff.
