The Pros and Cons of a Discharge Petition to Avoid Default

On May 9th, Joe Biden will be meeting with the four top congressional leaders. The president and Democrats are holding strong to their principle of not negotiating with hostage takers. They're reportedly looking at three different options for how to avoid default. A discharge petition is a method available to the majority of House members to force the speaker to hold something to hold a vote on a bill. Two, declaring the debt limit unconstitutional under the 14th amendment. And three, a two track strategy where Biden and McCarthy cut a deal on the budget that's separate from a debt ceiling increase.
