The Fusiform Shape of Fishes

The fusiform shape is very streamlined and in fact it's the best for reducing the resistance of moving through a fluid. Fluid can be either air or water so even birds have that sort of Fusiform shape. The fins are used to stabilize the body keep it moving straight ahead or to allow the fish to actually maneuver that is to change direction. We don't want to expend all our energy in just trying to move we want to save some energy for other things like mating and reproducing.
