Pythagoras became one of the most important authorities and intellectual heroes of the greek thinkers in late antiquity. One of the neoplatonists who most admired pythagoras was eamblicus, who lived in the third to fourth century a d. Iamblicus mentions many miraculous events, some of which were already reported much earlier, for instance, by aristotle. For a platonist pagan like eamblicUS, or his teacher, porphyry, Pythagoras could serve as an ideal holy man to rival jesus.
