The Role of the Secretariat in the UN Climate Negotiations

I came to this role as executive secretary just a few months after the Paris Agreement had been adopted in December 2015 in Paris. The Paris Agreement entered into force in only 11 months, which was something that even the colleagues that were negotiating the agreement in Paris would not have imagined. So I was very convinced that the secretariat needed to be very proactive in bringing to the attention of parties those areas where we needed to define how we would make that agreement operational.
