The scholarly consensus these days tends to lean towards the idea that King Arthur is purely a legend. There are some scholars and many more popular writers who advocate that King Arthur was a real person, or at least based on a real person. I really hope someday that Prince William's son Arthur becomes king and does take the name King Arthur would just be cool.
