Nature's Publication Process Without Referees

Nature was publishing articles that had not gone through a refereing process. A probably the most famous paper that nature has ever printed in the 19 53, a double helic structure by james watson and francis crick was never refereed. It was recommended to the editors of nature by the head of the cavendish laboratory. And to them, that was good enough. They would kind of print anything if it came recommended by the right people. That also meant that submissions that weren't coming from the right people were more likely to be rejected or sit in their files for months on end.
