Gin in the Nineteenth Century
The temperance movement focused on the dangers of all alcohols, including beer. Bitters were popularized in the u k., particularly pachos and angastura bitters. Plymouth gin flavored with angastera bitters became known as pink gin - it was both a popular beverage and a treatment for seasickness. Another nineteenth century innovation was the gimlet, combining gin and lime to prevent scurvy among sailors.
