For a long time in our history, Americans recognized this. It was just a fundamental fact and obvious. We lost that later on, but to know that that there were rival colonial projects that are formed on the Eastern and South Western rims of what's now the United States. Those projects were set up at different times by very different groups of people who had different religious and ethnographic and political characteristics.
