Robert Matthews' Surrender to the FBI
Robert Matthews was cornered at his Whibby Island safe house on December 7. Dozens of FBI agents armed with automatic weapons and dressed in full combat fatigues have been bused to the scene. A gunfight between Matthews and the feds broke out and raged for over 36 hours. It was clear that Matthews had no interest in being taken alive. And then in a preview of what would happen at Waco years later, agents fired tear gas into the house. Finally, in an attempt to smoke him out, they dropped flares on the building.
