I was hot-housed as a kid to read. There was never an issue. I went and put money in the electricity meter to get the lights on, which some people I studied with did. So I was just very, very conscious, but that was their way out, was by education. And if you don't have facility with language, so history, a historical context has been driven out of public discourse. Language skills are often limited, and the subtlety, the complexity of what's there is amazing. But once you're retired, you can read all the things you've always wanted to - Ecclesiastes, for example. It's truly wisdom books they called C
