In 1648 France basically goes bankrupt, and at that point the Supreme Law Court of France decides that it wants to intervene. That precipitates a first civil war, which is more of a standoff around Paris between the royal government and the leaders of civic society. In early 1649 they're forced into a humiliating treaty with their own subject, in which they're forced to dismantle certain aspects of the royal government. It's very very disruptive. The royal family basically has to flee Paris, and it flees to the palace of Saint-Germain-Arnay for sanctuary and for safety. Do they scheme to get back in it? How do they get back in power?
