How to Get Your Wife to Work Outside the Home
If you can't earn enough to support your family, then you've got to have your children go get some work. You bring in the money you need to push yourself over to that subsistence level. And you try to get the cheapest housing you can possibly get. There were huge sections of the United States that wouldn't be electrified until the 1930s.
