My 14-year-old daughter has a maths teacher who stands up at the beginning of every school year and tells the parents, do not tell your children you were rubbish at maths at school. He recognised a while ago that this has a terribly negative effect on attitude to learning. And fascinating to hear from the front lines of maths teaching and learning.
