After killing the wards and their housekeeper, charles said that something between him and carolane had shifted. He was very suddenly struck with the near inevitability that he was going to die in a shoot out with the copse - which he did not want. When they stopped off for cheesburgers at around one a m after killing the wards, no one recognized charles starkweather.
