The Myth of the Athenians

Erychthonius was given to the three daughters of keycrops, who raised him as their own. He resembled keycrops in appearance with a human body that ended in a snake's tail. For hundreds of years, a series of semi-mythical kings traced their lineage to him. The myth gives an explanation of how the Athenians believed they managed to be both born from the earth and from Athena.
