"I thought it was like 1926 and that I was going to go to New York and have drinks at a bar with an agent. And the agent was going to sell my book for lots of money," she says. "You learn pretty quickly in contemporary literary publishing that it's very difficult to make your way financially unless you get very lucky or have some sort of extraordinary talent"
