The German Expressionists and the Weimar Era

German expressionists have been undervalued within British scholarship. I felt that so much of the scholarship was in German and if you couldn't read German you wouldn't know anything about these women. So I kind of made it my mission to make German women artists more available in the English language. It's just the most sort of electric palpable work. There is especially kind of Weimar era. These women who have just got the vote. This sort of exploration of gender and sexuality and freedoms and independence and liberation. And there's also a lot of backlash against it too. That tension between this kind of ideal and idea of the young independent new woman wearing dresses above the knee having short haircuts,
