The Warfare Theory of Social Evolution

The state first emerges, Nietzsche says in the essay of the Greek state, as an objectification of instinct. It is born when hard, nomadic, barbarian peoples throw themselves onto mild, senile, older civilizations. He says they then emerge from this orgy of violence and bloodletting as this new fighting aristocracy. This is attested to by Ibn Khaldun. The sedentary cultures are all founded by these warrior peoples, but over time they become more peaceable and they eventually become conquered themselves.
