The Life and Times of Johnny Otis
Johnny Otis had his first hit in 1945 with Harlan Nocturne, which featured his friend Bill Douquett's song. After Hall of Nocturne became a hit, he got the opportunity to tour back in the ink spots and exposed him to a wider audience. He was not the typical white man in the music industry, in that he respected his black colleagues as friends and equals. Frank Zappa and Brian Wilson talked about listening to Johnny Otis's show as children.
