If there are 200,000 sound engineers in the United States, probably only 5% of them are women. This phenomenon has to do with the sense that technical space is a male space and music recording studio is amale space. There's a concept called the Leaky Pipeline that seems to apply here. The idea is that early in their lives, lots of women are interested in careers involving engineering, math, and science. But over time, many of these women leak out of that career path.
