Extermination Camps
In practice for the time that they operated holding German civilians until their transfer to the Soviet Gulag or back into Germany could be arranged. They essentially functioned as extermination camps. One of the most infamous was made out of an abandoned labor colony at Zagoda. The conditions in which these prisoners were forced to live were deliberately subhuman. Anyone who tried to escape this hell was immediately singled out for special treatment.
