Robert E. Lee was the son of a man named Henry Lighthorse Harry Lee, who had served as one of George Washington's cavalry commanders during the revolution. It was Harry Lee who memorialized George Washington as First and War, First and Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Countrymen. During Robert E. Lee's life, everybody knew that his father had written those words. And so Lee faces this choice between the Union and his native state of Virginia.
