In 1942, women were allowed to join the US Navy and Marine Corps in non-combat roles. In September of 1942, women first began to fly as civilians for the US Army Air Forces. The separate branch of the US Air Force would not be created until after the war. Women's Auxiliary Fairy Squadron's WAFS helped with aircraft transport but they weren't technically members of any military organization.
