Catherine I - A Woman's Guide to the Russian Empire
Catherine I was crowned Empress of Russia in 18th century. Her son Paul died soon after her coronation, and she took over the throne. She strove to project an image of strength as a strong female ruler. Catherine's dresses were often designed with subtle touches that aligned them with men's military clothing - making her look more like a glamorous but powerful soldier than a supposedly weak woman. But despite trying to reform serfdom under her rule, it did not get rid of tens of thousands of slaves. It would only be fully abolished in 1861.
